Anamaduwa, a small town in the Puttalam District, is home to one of the North Western Province's finest examples of ancient hydraulic engineering: a large irrigation tank (wewa) constructed over 2,000 years ago as part of the island-wide network that sustained dry-zone agriculture under the Anuradhapura kings. The tank remains in use today, providing water to surrounding paddy fields exactly as it did two millennia ago — a direct, working connection to an ancient civilisation. An adjacent Buddhist temple complex with a painted shrine room and a small dagoba sits on the tank bund, with views across the water to the surrounding forest. The area is genuinely off the tourist trail, and a visit provides a quiet, authentic counterpoint to the major sites of the Cultural Triangle. Dawn over the tank, with birds crossing the still water and fishermen launching their canoes, is a simple but genuinely moving experience.
Combine with a visit to Wilpattu National Park (30km away) for a full day in the North Western Province.
Dawn is the best time — the tank surface is mirror-calm and the birdlife is most active.
Dress respectfully when visiting the temple adjacent to the tank.
Best time of day: December to April (dry season — tank most scenic when water level is high after rains)
