Kalpitiya is an elongated sandbar peninsula on Sri Lanka's north-west coast that has become the country's top destination for kitesurfing, driven by strong and consistent south-west winds from May to October. The 40km sandbar separates the sheltered Dutch Bay lagoon — ideal for beginners learning to kite in flat water — from the open Indian Ocean on the western side. Offshore lies Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary, one of the largest and best-preserved coral reef systems in Sri Lanka at 307 sq km, accessible by boat from Kalpitiya for snorkelling and diving with whale sharks, leopard sharks, manta rays, and abundant reef fish. Year-round, large pods of spinner dolphins (300-500 individuals) inhabit the Kalpitiya waters and are easily encountered on morning boat trips. Accommodation on the peninsula ranges from simple surf camps to small boutique lodges, all with sea access on two sides.
Kitesurfing season is May to October when south-west winds are strong and consistent.
Whale shark snorkelling is most reliable from January to April when the ocean is calmest.
Book accommodation well in advance for May-October as kiting spots fill quickly.
Best time of day: Kitesurfing: May-October. Whale shark snorkelling: January-April. Dolphins: year-round.
