Kurunegala is the capital of the North Western Province and is defined by its unusual landscape: large granite boulders rise abruptly from the flat surrounding plains, each bearing a local animal name based on its silhouette — Elephant Rock, Tortoise Rock, Halmilla Rock. The largest, Ethagala (Elephant Rock) at 325m, is the site of a modern reclining Buddha statue and a series of carved reliefs, and the short climb rewards with panoramic views across the town and its colonial-era reservoir, Kurunegala Lake. The lake was originally constructed as part of the ancient irrigation network that sustained the medieval Kurunegala kingdom (a short-lived capital in the early 14th century). The lakeside road with its tall trees and colonial-era rest house is a peaceful place to sit in the early evening. Kurunegala is a natural hub for exploring Yapahuwa, Ridi Viharaya, and the broader North Western Province.
The climb to the top of Ethagala takes 20 minutes and can be hot midday — go in the morning.
The lakeside rest house serves decent Sri Lankan rice and curry if you need lunch.
Kurunegala works well as a base for one or two nights when exploring the North Western Province heritage circuit.
Best time of day: Year-round; mornings for the rock climb, evenings for the lakeside walk
