Yapahuwa is a dramatic granite rock fortress rising 100m from the flat scrub plains of the North Western Province, historically significant as the capital of a short-lived Sinhalese kingdom between 1272 and 1293 AD. During this period it housed the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, the possession of which conferred legitimacy to rule Sri Lanka, before the relic was captured by South Indian invaders. The fortress shares conceptual similarities with Sigiriya but receives a tiny fraction of its visitors, making it one of the most peaceful and atmospheric heritage sites in Sri Lanka. The ornamental stairway leading to the upper rock palace is particularly well preserved, with intricately carved stone panels of dancing figures, musicians, and royal emblems flanking each flight. Two carved stone lions guard the second gateway, and the views from the summit across the flat dry-zone plains stretching to the horizon are expansive. Yapahuwa is halfway between Colombo and Anuradhapura on the main road north, making it a natural stop on any cultural triangle itinerary.
Combine with Ridi Viharaya and Kurunegala as a full North Western Province heritage day.
The summit is accessible by climbing the carved staircase — allow 30 minutes each way.
Visit in the morning or late afternoon — the rock face provides no shade at midday.
Best time of day: Year-round; mornings before 10am best for photography and avoiding heat
