About Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil

Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is the dominant Hindu temple of Jaffna and the most spiritually significant in all of northern Sri Lanka, its golden gopuram (gateway tower) rising above the Nallur district and visible for kilometres around. The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan (Skanda, the Tamil deity of war and victory), and it was the royal temple of the medieval Jaffna Kingdom from the 15th century until the Portuguese destroyed the original structure in 1620. The current temple, rebuilt in the 18th century and progressively elaborated since, follows the classical Dravidian architectural tradition: elaborate gopuram towers covered in sculpted figures, concentric courtyards, and an inner sanctum of gold and precious stone. The Nallur Chariot Festival — a 25-day event held in August and September each year — is the largest Hindu festival in Sri Lanka, drawing pilgrims from across the Tamil diaspora worldwide. During the festival, a massive wooden chariot carrying the deity's image is pulled through the streets by thousands of devotees in a spectacle of extraordinary religious fervour. Dress requirements apply: men must remove shirts and wear a sarong, women must wear full traditional dress.

Highlights

  • Most important Hindu temple in northern Sri Lanka
  • 25-day Nallur Chariot Festival each August — Sri Lanka's largest Hindu festival
  • Medieval Jaffna Kingdom royal temple site
  • Gold-decorated inner sanctum
  • Classical Dravidian gopuram architecture

Practical Tips

Dress code is strict: men enter shirtless wearing a sarong (provided at the gate for LKR 50). Women must wear full traditional clothing — no sleeveless tops or shorts.

The main puja ceremonies occur at 6am, 12pm, and 6pm. The evening puja with lamps and chanting is the most atmospheric.

During the August-September festival, book accommodation in Jaffna weeks in advance. The chariot procession on the final day draws the largest crowds.

Photography is permitted outside the main sanctum but not inside.
