Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) is Sri Lanka's most revered mountain, rising 2,243m above the Sabaragamuwa foothills and drawing pilgrims of four faiths: Buddhists venerate the summit footprint as that of the Lord Buddha, Hindus attribute it to Lord Shiva, Christians and Muslims associate it with Adam. The 5,500-step pilgrimage route from Nallathanniya is illuminated by chains of lanterns through the night, and the season runs from December 15 to Vesak (May). Most pilgrims begin at 2am to reach the summit by 5:30am for sunrise — the 'shadow of the peak', a perfect triangular shadow cast westward by the rising sun, is visible for only a few minutes and is one of the rarest natural spectacles in Sri Lanka. Outside the pilgrimage season the lights are switched off and the climb is strenuous without infrastructure. If you intend to summit, plan to arrive at the base by 1:30am and carry warm layers as summit temperatures drop sharply.
Start the climb at 2am from Nallathanniya to reach the summit by sunrise around 5:30am.
Carry warm, windproof layers as the summit is significantly colder than the base.
Do not attempt outside the pilgrimage season (December 15 to May) as the path lights are off and the route is unmarked.
Best time of day: December 15 to May (pilgrimage season), start climb at 2am for sunrise
