About Sithulpawwa Rock Temple

Sithulpawwa (meaning 'Hill of Silent Monks') is an ancient Buddhist monastery dating to the 2nd century BC, built by King Kavantissa as a forest retreat. At its peak the complex housed over 12,000 monks in cave cells cut into the granite boulders. Today the site retains several active cave shrines with 19th-century murals, a functioning dagoba on the highest boulder, and a 3m seated Buddha carved directly into the rock face at the summit. The 300m climb through the boulder field takes about 20 minutes and passes resident peacocks, spotted deer, and occasional langur monkeys. The site is inside the Yala buffer zone, so wildlife encounters on the approach road are common. Few tourists make the detour, and the solitude at the summit with views across flat scrub to the sea is rare for a site of this age.

Practical Tips

Visit in the morning when the light is clearest and before midday heat makes the climb uncomfortable.

Remove shoes at the base of the rock steps before ascending to the shrines.

Combine with Yala National Park and Bundala for a full Hambantota day.
