About Seetha Amman Kovil

Seetha Amman Kovil is located at Sita Eliya, 5 kilometres from central Nuwara Eliya on the road to Welimada. According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, this is the site of the Ashoka Vatika where Sita was held captive by the demon king Ravana after being brought to Lanka. The temple houses shrines to Sita, Rama, Lakshmana, and Hanuman, and is an active place of worship for Hindu pilgrims, particularly from India. The adjacent stream has large round boulders with what pilgrims identify as Hanuman's footprints. The temple attracts a significant number of South Indian tourists following the Ramayana trail across Sri Lanka. Photography is permitted in the outer areas but not inside the main shrine room.

Highlights

  • Ramayana Ashoka Vatika site according to Hindu tradition
  • Active Hindu temple with Sita, Rama, and Hanuman shrines
  • Large boulder with traditional Hanuman footprint marking
  • Major stop on Sri Lanka's Ramayana pilgrim trail

Practical Tips

Remove shoes before entering the temple premises.

Indian and Hindu pilgrims visit in large groups particularly around Hindu festival days — Diwali and Navaratri see peak crowds.

Combine with a drive to Gregory Lake and the Pink Post Office in Nuwara Eliya town.

The temple is on a public road — no entry fee is charged.
