Kudumbigala Forest Hermitage is one of the oldest continuously inhabited forest monasteries in Sri Lanka, with rock inscriptions dating to the 2nd century BCE identifying it as a meditation retreat for Buddhist monks. The site covers a large area of granite boulders, caves used as dwelling cells, and jungle paths connecting scattered shrines. A steep 30-minute climb to the summit stupa rewards visitors with an unobstructed view over the flatlands of the Ampara district toward the coast and Kumana. Unlike most temple sites, the hermitage remains active: resident monks maintain strict schedules of meditation and visitors are expected to maintain silence in the upper sections. The site is 35 km from Arugam Bay via Panama and requires a four-wheel-drive or motorbike on the final 5 km of rough track.
Dress fully modestly: long trousers and a shirt covering shoulders are required throughout the site.
Maintain silence in the upper meditation areas; the resident monks follow strict schedules.
The final 5 km from Panama requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle or motorbike; do not attempt in a regular car after rain.
Start the summit climb before 9 AM to avoid midday heat on exposed rock.
Best time of day: May to September (dry season, manageable tracks)
