About Arugam Bay Beach
Arugam Bay's main point break is a right-hand wave that can peel for up to 200 metres on a good swell, making it consistently rated among the top surfing destinations in Asia. The bay sits on the southern coast of the Ampara district, facing the Indian Ocean directly to the east. Outside surfing season the flat water is calm enough for swimming and stand-up paddleboarding. The village behind the beach has a compact strip of guest houses, surf schools, and seafood restaurants serving fresh catch from the local fishing fleet. The best surf occurs from May to October when south and southwest swells wrap around the point; June and July tend to produce the most consistent overhead waves.
