When to go
Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka
The straight answer, then the honest month-by-region detail. Verified against climate records and current conditions, September 2026.
The short answer
December to mid-March for the classic route. But some coast of Sri Lanka is dry in almost every month, which is why we sell trips all year.
Two monsoons take turns: the southwest one wets Colombo, the south coast and the hills mostly June to August, while the northeast one wets the east roughly December to February. Pick the right coast for your dates and the island rarely says no. February is the driest single month across every region we track; October is the honest low point, when storms can land anywhere.

Month by region
Sri Lanka has no single dry season: when the southwest coast is wet, the east is at its best. Find your travel month and follow the green.

October caveat: the October-November inter-monsoon brings short storms islandwide plus Bay of Bengal cyclone-season risk; treat every October cell one notch more cautiously than shown. March note: the east coast is already drier than the west by March; the Dec-Feb "go west" rule does not extend there.

Timing questions, answered honestly
What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka?
For the classic route (Cultural Triangle, Kandy, hill country, south coast), December to mid-March is the prime window, and February is the driest single month across every region we track. For the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), the answer flips: May to September. There is no month where the whole island is at its best, and no month where all of it is bad.
When is the rainy season in Sri Lanka?
There are two. The southwest monsoon wets Colombo, the south coast and the hill country, most strongly June to August. The northeast monsoon wets the east and north roughly December to February. Two inter-monsoon windows (March-April and October-November) bring short afternoon thunderstorms islandwide, with October-November also carrying some cyclone-season risk from the Bay of Bengal.
Is October a bad time to visit Sri Lanka?
It is the honest low point: inter-monsoon storms can hit anywhere, and no coast is reliably dry. Trips work in October, but they need flexible planning and realistic expectations rather than a fixed beach itinerary. If your dates are flexible, November or early December buys noticeably better odds.
Is Christmas and New Year a good time to go?
Weather-wise yes, wallet-wise be ready: 20 December to early January is the busiest, most expensive window of the year, with popular south-coast hotels reported at double their November rates and hotspots like Galle Fort, Mirissa and Sigiriya at their most crowded. Book 2 to 3 months ahead for that window. Arriving in the first half of December gets you the same weather with fewer people and better prices.
Can I ride the famous Kandy to Ella train this season?
Partially, as of September 2026: cyclone damage has the Kandy side of the line closed, while the scenic Nanu Oya to Ella stretch runs. The practical version, which we arrange, is going by road to Nanu Oya and riding the best remaining section while your driver carries the luggage ahead. Full restoration is officially expected around the end of 2026 or early 2027, not yet confirmed.
Which months are cheapest?
The monsoon-shoulder months on whichever coast you pick: May and October-November on the west and south, or outside July-August on the east. Nationally, the window between late April and early December runs meaningfully cheaper than the December-March peak, with early December the sweet spot of good weather at pre-peak prices.
Weather varies year to year, so figures are typical ranges rather than promises. Festival dates are confirmed for 2026-27 where listed. Updated September 2026.
