The east coast, Cultural Triangle and north stay dry through July while the west, south coast and hills remain inside the southwest monsoon, and the European summer surge begins.
Is July a good time to visit?
Good on one side of the island, wet on the other, and busier than June or May. The east coast, Cultural Triangle and north stay dry through July, and Arugam Bay's surf season, roughly May to October, is at its July-August peak, while the west, south-west coast and hill country are still inside the southwest monsoon. European school holidays start landing from early July, so expect more company on the roads and in hotels than in June.

July is still inside the southwest monsoon window, so the west, south-west coast and hill country stay wet, Nuwara Eliya logs its highest rain-day count of May through September, while the east coast, north and Cultural Triangle remain dry. Route planning
How a trip works in July
July keeps the same east-leaning shape as June: Cultural Triangle, then the east coast (Trincomalee or the Pasikudah/Arugam Bay stretch), then the hills, without covering the same ground twice. If Kataragama is on the route in late July or August, build in extra time around the temple itself. The town gets busy during the festival.
Pack rain gear if the hills are on the itinerary: Nuwara Eliya logs its wettest month by rain-day count of May through September. Standard tropical kit covers the east coast and Cultural Triangle, both dry through July.

The Kandy-Ella train, this month
As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your July travel date; check current status before counting on it. We arrange the road-to-Nanu-Oya workaround either way.

Poya-day rules apply island-wide as usual. A driver-guide itinerary that includes Kataragama in late July or August should build in extra time around the temple precinct, which gets busy during the festival.

France's national school break starts 3 July 2027, several German states are already on break by early-to-mid July, and the Netherlands' earliest region starts 10 July 2027. July is one of the busier months on the routes those markets travel, particularly the east coast and Cultural Triangle. Book further ahead than you would for May or June.
