How a trip works in August
August combines the east-leaning shape of June and July with a pull toward Kandy for the Esala Perahera, if your dates allow. Cultural Triangle, east coast, hills, with Kandy as the last stop timed around the festival, works well, but book Kandy hotels well ahead if the dates overlap. Sinharaja re-enters the plan this month too, its second good window of the year, so a route with hill-country time can add a rainforest day without contradicting the rest of the guidance here.
Pack for humid, hot conditions on the coasts and Cultural Triangle, and for crowds and noise in Kandy if you are travelling around the Perahera dates.

The Kandy-Ella train, this month
As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your August travel date; check current status before counting on it. We arrange the road-to-Nanu-Oya workaround either way.

A trip that has you in Kandy around the Esala Perahera should expect the town at its busiest and most crowded of the year outside the Christmas-New Year window, with hotel demand spiking specifically around the procession nights.

Germany's latest-starting state, Bavaria, runs its 2027 summer break 31 July to 13 September, meaning nearly all of August falls inside every German state's break at once; the Netherlands' latest region runs 24 July to 5 September, and UK school holidays are in full swing through the month. Combined with the Kandy Esala Perahera landing in the same month, August is realistically busier than May, June, July or September.
