Good for the east coast and inland, but the west coast's recovery has not started yet. Trincomalee, Pasikudah and the Cultural Triangle are still in reasonable shape, though rain is climbing on the east coast too. The west and south-west coast actually get wetter than August this month, comparable to May's rainfall. It is a quiet, shoulder month again after the European summer surge, similar in character to May.

The weather in September, honestly
September is a transition month: the southwest monsoon is easing in the hills, but the west and south-west coasts see a fresh spike in rain ahead of the October-November inter-monsoon, while the east coast, still the best coast of the season, starts its own early rain increase ahead of the northeast monsoon that will dominate there from around November. Hill-country figures above are Nuwara Eliya's; Ella sits lower and tends to run warmer and drier. Figures are 1991 to 2020 climate averages.

How a trip works in September
September keeps the east-leaning shape of June, July and August, with two new planning points. First, Yala's Blocks 1 and 2 close for a few weeks from around mid-month, dates set annually, so route safari time to Udawalawe, Wilpattu, Kumana or Minneriya and Kaudulla instead if your dates land after mid-September. Second, the west and south-west coast are not yet the recovery story you might expect from an easing monsoon. Rain there is actually rising versus August. Cultural Triangle, east coast, hills stays the sound shape, with no leg driven twice.

The Kandy-Ella train, this month
As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your September travel date; check current status before counting on it. We arrange the road-to-Nanu-Oya workaround either way.

September sits after the European summer-holiday peak. France, Germany and the Netherlands are back at school by mid-September at the latest, Bavaria's 2027 break ends 13 September and the Netherlands' latest region ends 5 September, so September is a quieter, shoulder month again, similar in character to May.
