The hardest month of the year to plan a trip around. Colombo and Galle sit deep in the second inter-monsoon, the east coast is climbing fast out of its dry season, and the hill country sees more rainy days than any other month. The south-east coast around Tangalle is the driest stretch this month, at about 129mm. That is still a wet month for a beach. A route built around the Cultural Triangle and the safari parks that stay open works better than a fixed beach plan.

October sits inside the second inter-monsoon, which brings periodic squalls and, some years, a tropical cyclone. Colombo and Galle are deep in their wettest stretch of the year (359mm and 345mm), the hill country sees more rainy days than any other month, and the east coast, while still drier in absolute terms, is climbing fast toward November's peak. Yala's Blocks 1 and 2 close for a few weeks each year for the park's annual rest. In 2026 the closure ran from 14 September to 15 October. The dates change every year. An October trip does best built around the Cultural Triangle and the parks that stay open, with beach time kept flexible.

October sits inside the second inter-monsoon, October to November, which brings periodic squalls and, some years, a tropical cyclone. Colombo and Galle both climb past 340mm here; the east coast and north are rising fast but have not yet reached their peak, which lands in November or December. At Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, November is slightly wetter than October. Hill-country figures above are Nuwara Eliya's; Ella sits lower and tends to run warmer and drier. Route planning
How a trip works in October
October suits a route built around the Cultural Triangle and the safari parks that stay open. Sigiriya's rock fortress, Dambulla's painted cave temple and the ancient capitals Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa hold up reasonably well through the month, and Udawalawe, Wilpattu and Kumana all stay open if Yala's Blocks 1 and 2 are closed for their annual rest. Keep coastal time flexible and secondary, and build slack for short, localised thunderstorms.

The Kandy-Ella train, this month
As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your October travel date; check current status before counting on it. - Sunday 25 October 2026. Standard nationwide Poya rules apply: alcohol sales pause, many shops close, temples fill.
Poya-day rules apply island-wide on Vap Poya, as on every other month. Deepavali fell in November in 2026 (8 November), not October. Its date shifts with the lunar calendar; it is expected to land in October in 2027, to be confirmed closer to the date.

Low international demand combines with the year's most difficult weather to make October the clearest low-season window of the year. If dates are flexible, the trade-off is lighter crowds at Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle against real weather risk on every coast.
