Sri Lanka Itinerary: 7 Days - Ramayana Heritage Trail

A pilgrimage-shaped week following the Ramayana's Lankan chapters. From Negombo it climbs to Kandy for two nights of temples, then continues into the hills for the Seetha Amman Kovil at Sita Eliya, held by tradition to mark where Sita was kept captive. The return crosses to the Hatton side of the mountains, a different road with its own tea views, before a final night in Colombo. A guide who knows the epic makes this trip; ask us to pair you with one.

The journey, day by day

  1. Negombo

The flight lands at Bandaranaike International Airport, with a 30-minute transfer to Negombo, a fishing town on the coast. Munneswaram Temple, where Rama is said to have prayed to Shiva after defeating Ravana and about 45 minutes north of Negombo, fills the afternoon, then the fish market and beach as the day's catch comes in.

  2. Kandy

Kandy is about 4 hours away via Kurunegala, a market town roughly at the halfway point. The evening brings the puja, the drum and offering ceremony, at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic; it runs roughly 6:30 to 8pm, and foreign visitors pay an entrance fee at the gate.

A full day in Kandy: the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, laid out over 147 acres beside the Mahaweli River, then the Embekke Devale and Lankatilaka Vihara, a pair of 14th-century temples known for their carved wooden pillars and painted ceilings.

  4. Nuwara Eliya

The Ramboda Pass climbs through Pussellawa into the tea hills, about 2 hours 45 minutes to Nuwara Eliya. Seetha Amman Kovil, which tradition holds marks where Sita was kept captive, is worth reaching before the light fades.
