Sri Lanka Itinerary: 7 Days - Classic Ceylon Summer Highlights

When the southwest gets its monsoon, this is the week to book instead. Sigiriya and Dambulla open the trip, followed by Anuradhapura, the island's first capital, where the Sri Maha Bodhi tree has been tended for over two thousand years. Two nights at Trincomalee cover Nilaveli beach, the clifftop Koneswaram temple and snorkelling at Pigeon Island. The return runs down the west coast, a different road from the way in.

  2. Sigiriya, at your pace

Sigiriya's 200-metre rock citadel and the Dambulla Cave Temple, five caves with Buddhist murals dating from the temple's founding over 2,000 years ago through major 18th-century Kandyan-era repainting, take up the day. An optional afternoon safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park has resident elephants year-round; the large multi-herd Gathering builds through July and peaks in August and September.

  3. Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka's first capital and a sacred city over 2,000 years old, is about 1.5 hours away. Its ruins fill the afternoon: the white-domed Ruwanwelisaya dagoba, the brick mass of Jetavanaramaya, once the third-tallest structure in the ancient world, and the Sri Maha Bodhi, a fig tree grown from a cutting of the Buddha's own bodhi tree.
