About Uppuveli Beach

Uppuveli sits 4 kilometres north of Trincomalee town, separated from Nilaveli beach by a small lagoon. The 3-kilometre beach is calmer and less developed than Nilaveli, with a mix of local fishing activity and small guesthouses. The Trincomalee War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, is located 500 metres from the beach and contains 361 graves of Allied servicemen who died in the Indian Ocean theatre during World War II. Uppuveli functions as a more affordable base than Nilaveli for visitors using Trincomalee, with tuk-tuks running regularly to town. The beach itself is good for swimming from May to September, though the occasional lagoon outlet can create mild currents after heavy rain.

Highlights

  • Trincomalee Commonwealth War Cemetery with 361 WWII graves
  • Quieter and more affordable than neighbouring Nilaveli beach
  • Active fishing beach with early-morning boat launches
  • 3-kilometre stretch of calm water for May-September swimming
  • Regular tuk-tuks to Trincomalee town 4 km south

Practical Tips

Visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery early morning when it is cool and quiet; entry is free.

Mild currents can form near the lagoon outlet after rain; check with local guesthouses before swimming.

The fish market near the lagoon bridge is worth visiting at 6-7 AM.

Budget rooms start significantly lower than equivalent rooms in Nilaveli.
