Pigeon Island National Park covers just 4.71 square kilometres and consists of two small islands surrounded by Sri Lanka's most accessible live coral reefs. The park is named after the rock pigeon colonies that breed on the larger islet. Snorkelling over the reef reveals blacktip reef sharks resting in the shallows, sea turtles, and dense schools of tropical fish. The coral was damaged during the 1998 bleaching event but has recovered significantly on the north side of the larger island. A daily visitor quota limits access to protect the ecosystem. Arrive at the jetty in Nilaveli by 8:30 AM to secure a slot; afternoon boats are often sold out by noon.
Arrive at Nilaveli jetty by 8:30 AM; the park has a daily visitor cap and afternoon slots sell out.
Bring your own snorkel mask for a better fit; rental gear is available but basic.
Do not stand on coral; the reef is recovering and fragile.
Apply reef-safe sunscreen only: regular sunscreen is prohibited inside the park.
Best time of day: May to September (eastern dry season, clear water)
