About Nilaveli Beach

Nilaveli stretches for 12 kilometres along the coast north of Trincomalee, with powdery white sand, generally calm surf from May to September, and very few vendors compared to more commercialised beaches. The beach is the primary departure point for snorkelling trips to Pigeon Island National Park, located 1 kilometre offshore. Fishing boats leave from the northern end of the beach at dawn, and the fresh catch reaches local guesthouses by 7 AM. Stray dogs are present in the evenings; keep food inside guesthouse premises. The road running behind the beach passes through quiet lagoon country and connects to Trincomalee town in about 20 minutes by tuk-tuk.

Highlights

  • 12-kilometre stretch of white sand with few crowds
  • Closest beach to Pigeon Island National Park (1 km offshore)
  • Active fishing beach with fresh catch available at dawn
  • Calm water from May to September for safe swimming

Practical Tips

The Pigeon Island boat jetty is at the southern end of Nilaveli beach; park entry quotas fill early.

Tuk-tuks to Trincomalee town cost around LKR 400-600 and take 20-25 minutes.

Avoid leaving valuables on the beach; the area is quieter and less patrolled than tourist beaches.

June and July offer the best combination of calm water and clear visibility.
