Koneswaram Temple is one of Sri Lanka's Pancha Ishwarams (five sacred Shiva temples), originally built in the 3rd century BCE and rebuilt after Portuguese destruction in 1624. The temple sits atop Swami Rock, a promontory rising 130 metres directly above the Indian Ocean at the entrance to Trincomalee Harbour. Inside the complex, a 1624 Portuguese-era cannon and recovered Shiva lingams are displayed in an open courtyard. The surrounding cliff walk offers some of the clearest views of Trincomalee Bay. Visit on Friday mornings for the most active puja ceremonies, and remove footwear before the steps leading to the main sanctum.
Remove footwear before the final flight of steps to the sanctum.
Friday morning puja is the most atmospheric time to visit.
Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered required for entry.
The cliff walk around the temple is free; the temple itself charges a small donation.
Best time of day: May to September (eastern dry season)
