Sigiriya rock fortress at sunrise

Classic route · Year-round

Sri Lanka Itinerary: 7 Days - Classic Ceylon Highlights

A sensible seven days with no backtracking. Sigiriya gets two nights, enough for the fortress climb and Dambulla's painted caves at an easy pace. Kandy and the tea country follow, then a jeep safari at Udawalawe, where elephant sightings hold up year-round. The last full day belongs to Galle Fort: rampart walls, a working lighthouse, dinner inside the old town.

The journey, day by day

  1. Sigiriya

The drive from the airport runs to Sigiriya, about 4 hours through Kurunegala and Dambulla, with a lunch stop along the way.

    Bandaranaike AirportSigiriya157.5 km · 3.5-5 h · A3, A6passing Negombo (lagoon town), Kurunegala (rock-and-lake town), Dambulla (Dambulla Cave Temple)
  2. Sigiriya, at your pace

Sigiriya's 200-metre rock citadel and the Dambulla Cave Temple, five caves cut into a cliff face over 2,000 years ago and covered in Buddhist murals largely repainted in the 18th-century Kandyan style, take up the day. An optional afternoon safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park can find elephant herds numbering in the hundreds during The Gathering, July to October; outside that window Kaudulla is the more reliable park and herds run smaller.

  3. Kandy

Kandy, the hill capital that has guarded Buddhism's holiest relic since the 16th century, is about 2.5 hours away via Matale. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake fill the afternoon, ending with the evening puja, a drumming and offering ceremony held three times daily.

  4. Nuwara Eliya

The road climbs into the hills via Peradeniya, Gampola and the Ramboda Pass to Nuwara Eliya, a hill town of Tudor-style cottages built by British tea planters, about 3 hours. A working tea factory shows the morning's leaves turned into black tea, then it's a walk along the shore of Gregory Lake.

  5. Udawalawe

South through the hiking town of Ella and Wellawaya, Udawalawe is about 4 hours away. An open jeep safari through Udawalawe National Park in the afternoon covers elephant herds visible year-round, unlike Yala National Park's Block 1 and Block 2, which close for about a month in the September-October dry season most years (check current closure dates before booking).
