Sri Lanka Itinerary: 7 Days - Sigiriya, Tea Country and Coast Honeymoon
Seven days that alternate landmark mornings with quiet evenings. The Sigiriya climb comes early, before the crowds and the heat. Kandy's lakeside and temple fill one day, tea country at altitude the next. A private safari at Udawalawe breaks the journey south to Mirissa, where two nights leave time for Coconut Tree Hill at sunset and seafood grills on the sand.

The journey, day by day
Sigiriya
Bandaranaike Airport is the start of the week: the drive to Sigiriya, a 200-metre rock citadel rising sheer out of the jungle and built as a royal palace in the 5th century, takes about 5 hours via Kurunegala and Dambulla, with a lunch stop along the way. The rock is floodlit above the tree line by the time you check in for the night.

Reading before you go
Kandy
Be at Sigiriya for the 7am gate opening, before the tour buses arrive, and climb the roughly 1,200 steps past the ancient frescoes and the stone Lion's Paw entrance, before the heat builds, then drive on to Kandy, the hill capital of Sri Lanka's last kingdom (about 3 hours through Matale's spice gardens). The evening belongs to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth and its drum-and-flute puja.

Temple of the Tooth Relic
Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy houses a tooth relic of the Buddha and has been the most sacred Buddhist site in Sri Lanka since the 4th century AD.
Udawattakele Forest Reserve
A 104-hectare protected cloud forest reserve directly above central Kandy, with 68 recorded bird species and multiple walking trails through bamboo groves and tropical trees.
Kandy Lake
Artificial lake built by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinha in 1807 at the centre of Kandy, encircled by a 3km walkway and flanked by the Temple of the Tooth.
Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue
A 26.8-metre white seated Buddha statue on Bahirawakanda Hill overlooking central Kandy, visible from most of the city and accessible by a 30-minute walk or tuk-tuk.
Royal Botanical Gardens Peradeniya

A 48-metre spiral tower on a 1,600m peak near Gampola with a multi-religious complex below and 360-degree views reaching Kandy, Hatton, and the coastal plains.
Victoria Dam & Reservoir
Sri Lanka's largest hydropower dam, completed in 1985 on the Mahaweli River with a 122-metre arch dam wall, creating a 722-hectare reservoir visible from a public viewing platform.
Aluviharaya Rock Cave Temple
A 1st-century BC rock cave monastery near Matale where the Tripitaka Buddhist scriptures were first committed to writing on ola palm leaves, with a restored complex of cave shrines.

Nuwara Eliya
The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, 147 acres of giant bamboo and orchid houses laid out in 1843, fill the morning before the climb into the hills to Nuwara Eliya, a former British hill station at 1,868 metres surrounded by tea estates (about 2h45 through the waterfalls of Ramboda Pass). Seetha Amman Kovil

Udawalawe
Mornings here mean a tea estate walk or a row across Gregory Lake, the boating lake at the centre of Nuwara Eliya town,, then the drive to Udawalawe (about 4h45, through the hill town of Ella and the Wellawaya junction). By afternoon you're on an open-jeep safari inside Udawalawe National Park, one of the most reliable places in the country to see wild elephants.

Mirissa
An optional sunrise safari for the elephants still out feeding comes first, then the drive to Mirissa, a curved beach town on the south coast (about 4h45 via Thanamalwila and Tangalle). Check in for two nights with nothing scheduled but sand.

Parrot Rock (Mirissa)
A large flat-topped rock at the eastern end of Mirissa Bay, reachable by a short swim at low tide, popular for cliff jumping into 5m water below.
Coconut Tree Hill (Mirissa)
A small rocky headland east of Mirissa beach planted with tall coconut palms, offering a 270-degree ocean panorama 20m above the water — one of Sri Lanka's most photographed viewpoints.
Mirissa Beach
A 1km crescent bay 150km south of Colombo, Sri Lanka's primary departure point for blue whale watching (November to April), with a calm swimming beach and a growing restaurant scene.
