About Coconut Tree Hill (Mirissa)

Coconut Tree Hill is a grassy promontory on the eastern side of Mirissa Bay, identified by a cluster of tall coconut palms leaning over the ocean from a 20m bluff. The 10-minute walk from the main beach road through a small village reaches the tip, where the land falls away on three sides and the view covers the open Indian Ocean to the south, Mirissa Bay to the west, and the coast stretching toward Weligama to the east. It is one of the most widely reproduced images of Sri Lanka on social media. Sunrise and sunset both produce impressive colours, and the hill is best visited in the early morning before crowds peak between 8 and 11am. Entry is managed by the local family who own the land.

Highlights

  • 270-degree ocean panorama from 20m cliff
  • One of Sri Lanka's most photographed coastal viewpoints
  • Tall leaning coconut palms silhouetted against the sky
  • 10-minute walk from Mirissa main beach

Practical Tips

Arrive at sunrise (around 6am) for the best light and to avoid the peak crowds that arrive 8-11am.

The access path goes through a local village — be respectful of residents' privacy.

Wear non-slip shoes as the grass on the headland can be slippery when wet.
