Mirissa is Sri Lanka's primary whale watching departure point, sitting at the southern tip of the island where the ocean floor drops sharply offshore and blue whales, sperm whales, and spinner dolphins feed between November and April. Morning boat trips of three to four hours depart from Mirissa Harbour, and blue whale sightings are reported on roughly 80% of excursions during peak season. The beach is a pleasant 1km crescent bay with generally calm water. The eastern end of the bay has a rocky outcrop (Parrot Rock) reachable by a short swim at low tide. The strip of restaurants and guesthouses has developed rapidly since 2010. Book whale watching with operators who follow the Sri Lanka whale watching code of conduct, which limits boat speed and approach distance.
Book whale watching at least a day in advance; departures are at 6:30am and trips last 3-4 hours.
November to April is peak whale season; January to March is the most reliable window.
Take sea sickness tablets the night before if you are susceptible — the ocean can be rough.
