The shape is simple and it goes one way: inland to the last royal capital, up through the Ramboda Pass into the tea country, down into the Ella gap, then off the escarpment to the south coast. You never drive a road twice and you never backtrack to a place you have already been.
What that buys you is unscheduled time, which is the actual point of a trip like this. Day two in Kandy is open. Day five at Mirissa is open. Between them, the one long drive is broken by a waterfall, a working tea factory and a hill station at 1,868 m, so even the travel day is not just travel.

Your driver-guide meets you at the airport for the drive inland. You check in for two nights, which means no repacking tomorrow. If you land with light left, the Kandy Lake circuit is a flat 3.5 km around water the last king of Kandy had dug in 1807, and it takes about 45 minutes at an unhurried pace.

The temple is worth timing rather than just visiting: the puja ceremonies at 5.30am, 9.30am and 6.30pm are when the chamber holding the relic casket is opened. After that the day is open. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, 6 km west, cover 59 hectares and take a comfortable two hours, with an avenue of royal palms and a giant Javan fig. Udawattakele, the old royal forest garden behind the temple, is quieter and closer. An evening dance performance with drumming runs about an hour if you want it.

Day 3
Over the Ramboda Pass to Ella
Kandy to Ella, via Nuwara Eliya
129 km, about 4 hours plus stops
The longest drive inland, and the one worth taking slowly. The road climbs out of Kandy into switchbacks past Gampola, with Ramboda Falls dropping 109 m beside it at roughly the halfway point. Above that the hillsides turn to tea: a working estate and factory here shows plucking, withering, rolling, oxidation and firing under one roof, and the tasting at the end is the reason to stop properly. You pass through Nuwara Eliya at 1,868 m, where the air is cold enough to want a jacket even at midday, then drop into Ella and its gap in the escarpment for the night.

Day 4

202 km, about 4 hours 10 minutes
Little Adam's Peak is about 45 minutes up a stepped path and it is best at sunrise, looking straight into the Ella Gap with the mist still in it. Nine Arch Bridge is a 20-minute walk below, a 91 m viaduct completed in 1921 and built in stone and brick without steel; check the day's train times at your hotel and be in position ten minutes before one crosses. Then the road drops off the escarpment in hairpins, the temperature climbs about 12 degrees in an hour, and you arrive on the south coast for two nights.

The one day with nothing on it. If you want the whale boat it leaves the harbour at about 6.30am between roughly November and April, runs three to five hours, and nothing at sea is guaranteed. Otherwise: Coconut Tree Hill is a ten-minute walk from the east end of the beach and is the one people photograph, Parrot Rock is climbable at low tide, and the bay itself is small enough to swim across. Ayurveda treatments can be arranged at most properties here with a day's notice.

Mirissa to Bandaranaike Airport
188 km, about 3 hours 15 minutes on the Southern Expressway
The Southern Expressway covers this in one run with no town traffic until the airport interchange, so the last morning can stay on the beach. If your flight is late enough, Galle Fort is an hour up the coast and makes an easy stop on the way: a walled town the Portuguese began in 1588 and the Dutch rebuilt from 1663, still lived in rather than preserved. Allow the drive plus three hours before an international departure.

Before you book
Serene Romantic Escape is a 6-day couples' route built around settled stays rather than a new hotel every night: two nights in Kandy, one in Ella, two at Mirissa. It suits an anniversary, a short honeymoon, or any couple who would rather have free afternoons than a full sightseeing schedule.
It is built for December to March, when the hill country is at its driest and the south-west coast is in its own dry season. Total driving across the six days is about 645 km, and three of the five nights are in places you stay two nights, so you unpack twice instead of five times.
The one long day is the third, Kandy to Ella at just under four hours, and it is deliberately loaded rather than emptied: Ramboda Falls at the halfway point, a working tea estate and factory, and the climb to 1,868 m at Nuwara Eliya before the descent into Ella. Nuwara Eliya is a pass-through on this route rather than an overnight, which is what keeps the hotel count at three.
An earlier version of this route finished at Bentota on the west coast. Reaching it from the hills took five and a half hours in the car, most of a day. Mirissa is reached from Ella in just over four, and it adds an optional whale-watching boat between roughly November and April, which Bentota does not have. There is no wildlife safari and no Cultural Triangle here; both need extra days, so ask about extending to eight or nine if either matters.
Good to know
How much free time do we actually get?
More than any other 6-day route in the catalogue. Day two in Kandy has one fixed item, the temple, and the rest is open. Day five at Mirissa has nothing scheduled at all. Day six stays on the coast until you leave for the airport. That is roughly two and a half unscheduled days out of six.
Why is there no Nuwara Eliya overnight if the trip includes tea country?
Because you pass through it on day three and get the tea estate, the factory and Ramboda Falls without a hotel change. Adding a Nuwara Eliya night would take the hotel count from three to four and cut a beach night to pay for it. If you would rather have the hill-station night, we can rearrange it; it is your trip.
Can we add a Yala safari?
Not inside six days without giving up a beach night, and a safari day trip from Mirissa is not practical at this distance. Adding two days makes it comfortable, or look at the 8-day Essence of Sri Lanka, which has the safari built in.
What are the driving days like?
Two of the five are long: day three, Kandy to Ella at about four hours, and day four, Ella to Mirissa at about four hours ten. Both are broken by stops rather than driven straight through. Day one is 3 hours 30 from the airport and day six is 3 hours 15 back. Days two and five have no transfer at all.
Is this suitable for a proposal or an anniversary, not just a honeymoon?
