Overview
Sri Lanka's Ramayana Trail links the places where, according to tradition, Rama, Sita, Hanuman and Ravana crossed paths after Sita's abduction, from the Shiva lingam Rama is said to have installed at Manavari to the cave above Ravana Falls where legend holds Sita was kept. This 7-day circuit runs from the west-coast temple town of Chilaw through the tea hills of Nuwara Eliya to Ella and the south coast, visiting Munneswaram Temple, Seetha Amman Temple, Hakgala Botanical Garden (identified in local tradition with Ravana's Ashok Vatika), Divurumpola, Ravana Falls and Cave, and Rumassala hill above Unawatuna, where tradition places a fragment of the herb-mountain Hanuman carried from the Himalayas. A stop at Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, home to a shrine for Vibhishana, bookends the trip near Colombo. The route is popular with Indian travellers combining pilgrimage with a hill-country and beach holiday, and vegetarian meals are confirmed at every hotel on request. Every site's Ramayana association is presented here as devotional tradition, not verified history, and your guide will frame it the same way. Book hill-country hotels early if you are travelling in the December-to-March high season.

Day 1
Arrival, Negombo, and the Vibhishana shrine at Kelaniya
Colombo (Airport) to Negombo, via Kelaniya
Your driver-guide meets you on arrival for a stop at Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, a temple the Buddha is said to have visited around 500 BC and, according to the Ramayana tradition, the seat from which Vibhishana ruled Lanka after Rama's war with Ravana. Its shrine to Vibhishana and the temple's murals of his coronation are worth 45 minutes before continuing to your Negombo hotel for the night. Settle in with a vegetarian welcome dinner ahead of a full week on the road.

Day 2
Munneswaram and Manavari, then on to Kandy
Negombo to Chilaw to Kandy
Drive north to Chilaw for Munneswaram Temple, a Shiva temple with a documented history back to at least the 11th century, where tradition holds Rama prayed to Shiva to cleanse the sin of killing the Brahmin-born Ravana. Six kilometres away, Manavari Temple marks the site where tradition holds Rama installed the first of five Shiva lingams on Shiva's instruction. From here the drive continues inland to Kandy for the night, roughly three hours.

Day 3
Into tea country, Sita's captivity site
Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
Climb through the Ramboda Pass into Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's tea-country hill station at around 1,868 m elevation, roughly two and a half hours from Kandy. Visit Seetha Amman Temple at Sita Eliya, the only Hindu temple in Sri Lanka dedicated to Sita, where circular depressions on the rock face across the stream are said locally to be Hanuman's footprints. Nearby, Hakgala Botanical Garden, identified in tradition with Ravana's Ashok Vatika, sits at roughly 1,745 m and is among the highest-altitude botanical gardens in the world.

Day 4
Divurumpola and on to Ella
Nuwara Eliya to Ella, via Welimada
Head south toward Welimada to Divurumpola Temple, a Buddhist temple that tradition identifies as the site of Sita's agni pariksha, the fire ordeal that proved her purity to Rama. Continue over the hills to Ella, a small hill-country town known for its viewpoints and railway line. In the afternoon, visit Ravana Falls, a 25-metre cascade beside the main road, and Ravana Cave above it at about 1,370 m elevation, where legend places Sita during her captivity.

Day 5
South to Ussangoda and the coast
Ella to Unawatuna, via Wellawaya and Ussangoda
Descend from the hills toward the south coast, stopping at Ussangoda, a stretch of bare, reddish coastal grassland that local tradition associates with a landing strip for Ravana's flying craft. The unusual soil colour comes from serpentine rock and makes it a worthwhile stop even without the legend. From here, continue to the beach town of Unawatuna for the night, a drive of around four to five hours in total.

Day 6
Rumassala hill and free time on the coast
Unawatuna (Rumassala hill), optional Galle Fort
Walk or drive up Rumassala hill, which local tradition holds is a fragment of the Himalayan herb-mountain Hanuman carried to heal Lakshmana, dropped here as he flew back toward India. The hill's forest today is a protected sanctuary with coastal viewpoints over Unawatuna bay. Spend the rest of the day at leisure on the beach, or take the short optional drive to the 17th-century Galle Fort for shopping and a walk along the ramparts.

Departure
Unawatuna to Colombo (Airport)
After breakfast, transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for your onward flight, a drive of roughly two and a half hours depending on traffic through Colombo. Your driver-guide can build in a stop for last-minute shopping if your flight timing allows.

Is vegetarian food easy to find throughout the trip?
Yes. Rice-and-curry with a vegetable spread is standard across Sri Lanka, and we confirm a vegetarian menu with each hotel in advance. Let us know ahead of time if you need pure-vegetarian (no onion or garlic) or Jain meals, since not every kitchen stocks for this by default.
What is the dress code at the temples on this route?
Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove shoes and hats before entering any temple or kovil. At Hindu sites such as Munneswaram and Seetha Amman, some inner sanctums restrict entry to Hindu devotees only; your guide will point out where this applies.
Are these Ramayana sites archaeologically confirmed?
No. Sites like Munneswaram, Divurumpola and Ravana Cave are associated with the Ramayana through long-standing local tradition and devotional belief, not through archaeological evidence. We present them, and recommend you treat them, as living tradition rather than settled history.
Is the itinerary flexible for pilgrims who want more time at any one temple?
Yes. The route is built with buffer time at each stop; travellers on a dedicated pilgrimage can extend a single site by shortening free time in Nuwara Eliya or Unawatuna. Let us know your priorities when booking.
