About Unawatuna Beach

Unawatuna is one of Sri Lanka's most consistently swimmable beaches, protected from the open Indian Ocean swell by a headland that creates a calm, shallow bay of roughly 600m. The reef 50 metres offshore provides basic snorkelling with reef fish, small turtles, and coral formations accessible without a boat. The beach road runs the full length of the bay and is lined with restaurants, guesthouses, and dive shops, making it among the most organised places to base yourself on the south coast. The bay is notably sheltered from the south-west monsoon between May and October, when waves remain manageable while beaches further south can be rough. For the best visibility snorkelling, come between November and April when the water is clearest.

Highlights

  • Sheltered bay with calm, year-round swimming
  • Coral reef 50m offshore — no boat required for snorkelling
  • 600m crescent bay with good beach infrastructure
  • Protected from south-west monsoon swell

Practical Tips

Snorkel in the morning before afternoon winds disturb the water visibility.

The eastern end of the bay near the Rumassala headland is the quietest stretch of beach.

November to April gives the clearest water for snorkelling and the calmest sea conditions.
