The Nine Arch Bridge at Ella is one of the most photographed railway structures in Asia, a 91-metre, nine-arch stone viaduct built in 1921 entirely from brick and mortar without a single piece of steel — construction materials could not be transported during World War I. The bridge carries the Colombo to Badulla hill country railway line through dense jungle at 1,073m altitude, and the scene of a blue train crossing the arches framed by tea-covered hills is widely used to represent Sri Lanka in international travel media. Position yourself on the hillside to the left of the bridge (approached via a short jungle path from Ella town, 20 minutes on foot) to capture the full nine arches in profile. Train departure times from Ella station are approximately 9:10am and 3:15pm — confirm locally as schedules change seasonally.
Arrive 15–20 minutes before train time to find a good position on the hillside path
The 9:10am crossing has better morning light; the 3:15pm crossing suits afternoon light
Wear sturdy shoes — the access path is steep and muddy after rain
Best time of day: 9:00am or 3:00pm (before train crossing)
