The Nuwara Eliya Post Office is a functioning government post office built in 1894 during the British colonial period. Its distinctive pink exterior, Gothic-style arched windows, and red-tiled roof make it one of the most recognisable colonial buildings in the Sri Lankan highlands. The building is part of a cluster of Victorian-era structures in central Nuwara Eliya that also includes the Grand Hotel, the Hill Club, and the Racecourse. The post office is open on weekdays and Saturday mornings and still processes domestic and international mail. It is located on the main road through town, 200 metres from the Nuwara Eliya central bus stop. Visitors can enter, purchase stamps, and send postcards — a popular activity with tourists.
The post office is open weekdays 8:30am-5:00pm and Saturday 8:30am-1:00pm; closed Sundays.
Buy a Sri Lanka stamp and send a postcard home — delivery typically takes 10-21 days internationally.
The best photography angle is from directly across the road on the western pavement, from about 7am when light hits the pink facade.
Combine with a walk to Gregory Lake, 700 metres to the south.
Best time of day: Year-round; morning light (7am-9am) for photography
