Pidurangala Rock sits at roughly 200 metres above the surrounding plain and is the preferred viewpoint for photographing Sigiriya Rock Fortress directly to the south. The 45-minute climb passes a 5th-6th century reclining Buddha carved from stone and set into a cave at the summit base, which is an active place of Buddhist worship. The upper section requires scrambling over boulders without steps or rails, which makes the climb more physically demanding than Sigiriya itself. Entry is via the Pidurangala Royal Cave Temple at the base, where a small fee is charged. The summit is best at sunrise: Sigiriya is lit from the east and the surrounding jungle canopy turns golden. This is the most popular photography spot for Sigiriya in Sri Lanka.
Start the climb by 5:30am to reach the top before sunrise — a torch (flashlight) is needed for the lower section in the dark.
Wear closed-toe shoes with grip — the final 50 metres involves boulder scrambling with no handrails.
Entry fee is approximately LKR 500 (USD 1.50) paid at the temple gate.
This climb is much easier and cheaper than Sigiriya but gives a superior angle for photography.
Best time of day: Sunrise year-round; January to April for clearest skies
