About Kandalama Lake

Kandalama Tank is an ancient reservoir originally built during the Anuradhapura period and later restored. It covers around 2,000 acres and is flanked by dense jungle on its northern bank, making it a rich habitat for water birds, elephants, and crocodiles. The Heritance Kandalama hotel, designed by Geoffrey Bawa and built into the rock face above the lake's north shore, is an architectural landmark that draws visitors independent of the nature attractions. Boat tours can be arranged through local operators for birdwatching, and elephant sightings near the water's edge are common in the late afternoon. The combination of ancient engineering, wildlife, and Bawa architecture makes this a worthwhile stop between Dambulla and Sigiriya.
