Sri Lanka Itinerary: 7 Days - Family Week
Seven days a 6-year-old can enjoy: Sigiriya climbed cool and early, an elephant safari, Kandy's drumming ceremony, and Bentota's shallow water to finish.A first Sri Lanka week built around children's stamina, not a checklist. Negombo absorbs the arrival day with a beach and an early night. Sigiriya gets two nights, so the 1,200-step climb happens fresh in the cool of the morning and an afternoon jeep safari at Kaudulla or Minneriya fits without a rush. Kandy brings the Temple of the Sacred Tooth's evening drumming ceremony, a Colombo night breaks the drive to the coast, and the trip ends in Bentota's shallow, calm water.

The journey, day by day
Negombo
Land and drive 30 to 45 minutes to Negombo, a fishing town near the airport. A swim, an early dinner, and bed; the real driving starts tomorrow, after everyone has slept.

Negombo Beach (Lewis Place)
A long sandy beach in Negombo town, 35km north of Colombo, fronted by a strip of hotels and beach bars popular with international package tourists.

Sri Lanka's busiest wholesale fish auction, held at Lellama harbour from 6am daily, processing hundreds of tonnes of fresh catch.

Sigiriya
North to Sigiriya, the fifth-century rock fortress, about 3.5 hours broken by a proper lunch stop. The afternoon is for the hotel pool; children travel better when the first day in a new base asks nothing of them.

Reading before you go
Sigiriya, at your pace
Climb Sigiriya before 8am, while the steps are cool and the site is quiet; children manage the 1,200 steps far better before the heat. An afternoon jeep safari at Kaudulla or Minneriya National Park follows, with elephants reliable year-round and the famous Gathering peaking July to October.
Kandy
Kandy is about 2.5 hours away via the spice country around Matale. The lake walk fills the late afternoon, then the Temple of the Sacred Tooth's evening drumming ceremony, which starts around 6:30pm and holds most children's attention better than any museum will.

Temple of the Tooth Relic
Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy houses a tooth relic of the Buddha and has been the most sacred Buddhist site in Sri Lanka since the 4th century AD.
Udawattakele Forest Reserve
A 104-hectare protected cloud forest reserve directly above central Kandy, with 68 recorded bird species and multiple walking trails through bamboo groves and tropical trees.
Kandy Lake
Artificial lake built by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinha in 1807 at the centre of Kandy, encircled by a 3km walkway and flanked by the Temple of the Tooth.
Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue
A 26.8-metre white seated Buddha statue on Bahirawakanda Hill overlooking central Kandy, visible from most of the city and accessible by a 30-minute walk or tuk-tuk.
Royal Botanical Gardens Peradeniya
Sri Lanka's largest botanical garden covering 147 acres on a meander of the Mahaweli River, established in 1821 with over 4,000 plant species including a 350-year-old Java fig tree.

Colombo
The drive down to Colombo runs about 3.5 hours, with the elephants at Pinnawala as the mid-morning break. The evening is Galle Face Green: kites, street snacks, and the sunset crowd along the seafront.

Bentota
A short 1.5-hour run on the expressway to Bentota, then a full beach day: a morning boat ride through the Madu Ganga mangroves, where monitor lizards sun themselves on the banks, and the Kosgoda turtle hatchery, where eggs are incubated and hatchlings released to the sea within a few days.
