About Pettah Market

Pettah is the commercial heart of Colombo, a dense grid of streets immediately east of Fort where wholesale and retail traders have operated since the Dutch colonial period. Each street is informally dedicated to a category: Second Cross Street for electronics, Third Cross Street for clothing and fabric, Fifth Cross Street for spices and dry goods, and so on. The district is almost entirely unshaded, loud, and packed during business hours. The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (built 1909), with its distinctive red-and-white striped facade, stands at the centre of the market district. The Old Town Hall, a Dutch-era building, is nearby. Early morning (before 10am) is the most manageable time to explore; bring cash as most stalls do not accept cards.

Highlights

  • Oldest commercial district in Colombo, active since Dutch colonial era
  • Each street specialises in one trade: spices, electronics, fabrics, hardware
  • Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (1909) with distinctive red-and-white striped facade
  • Wholesale prices on spices, textiles, and local goods
  • Dutch-era Old Town Hall building in the district

Practical Tips

Go before 10am to avoid peak heat and crowd; the market is busiest from 10am to 3pm.

Bring only cash; most stalls and small shops do not accept credit cards.

Watch your pockets in the busiest lanes — the market attracts pickpockets targeting tourists.
