The Dutch Hospital in Colombo Fort is one of the oldest structures in Sri Lanka, dating to the late 17th century when it served as a medical facility for the Dutch East India Company garrison. After decades of neglect as a government office, it was restored between 2011 and 2012 and opened as a dining and retail precinct with thick colonial masonry walls, arched walkways, and a central courtyard. Today it houses well-known Sri Lankan restaurant brands including The Ministry of Crab, Colombo Courtyard, and Nuga Gama, as well as jewellery and design boutiques. Prices are significantly higher than the surrounding Fort area. The complex closes for a lunch break between 1pm and 2pm. It is the most accessible air-conditioned break from the heat of the Fort district.
Book The Ministry of Crab weeks in advance if you want to dine there; it is consistently full.
The complex closes between 1pm and 2pm for a lunch break, so plan arrivals accordingly.
Evening (from 6pm) is the best time to visit for atmosphere, when the courtyard is lit up.
Best time of day: Year-round; evenings are most atmospheric
