Galle Face Green is a 5-acre strip of grassed seafront running along the Indian Ocean on Colombo's western edge, originally laid out by the Dutch in the 17th century and formalised by the British in 1859. The promenade stretches roughly 500 metres from the Galle Face Hotel in the south to the Colombo Fort boundary in the north, flanked by the colonial-era Galle Face Hotel on one side and the ocean on the other. From late afternoon onward, the green fills with families, kite sellers, and vendors serving isso wade (prawn fritters) and kottu roti from carts. Sunsets here, looking directly west over the Indian Ocean, are among the best in the city. Arrive around 5pm to catch the late-afternoon sea breeze and stay for sunset, then eat at the street food stalls that line up along the promenade.
Come between 5pm and 7pm for the sea breeze, street food, and sunset; midday heat makes the open green uncomfortable.
Try isso wade from the carts along the promenade — they cost around LKR 150 each.
The Galle Face Hotel terrace bar is a good option for a drink with ocean views if budget allows.
Best time of day: Year-round; late afternoon and evening are best
