About Trincomalee Harbour

Trincomalee Harbour is a natural deep-water harbour spanning approximately 15 kilometres, protected by Swami Rock to the south and the Dutch Bay headland to the north. It was described by Admiral Horatio Nelson as the finest harbour in the world, and the British Royal Navy used it as a major base throughout World War II to counter the Japanese fleet in the Indian Ocean. The harbour remains an active Sri Lanka Navy base, so civilian access is primarily by sightseeing boat from the town jetty or from elevated viewpoints at Swami Rock and Fort Frederick. Whale watching trips also depart from the harbour between April and September, targeting blue whales and sperm whales in the deeper offshore waters.

Highlights

  • One of the world's largest natural deep-water harbours at 15 km across
  • Cited by Admiral Nelson as finest harbour in the Indian Ocean
  • Major Royal Navy base in World War II
  • Blue and sperm whale watching trips April to September
  • Panoramic views from Swami Rock and Fort Frederick ramparts

Practical Tips

Sightseeing boat tours from the town jetty run May to September and take around 1.5 hours.

The best elevated viewpoints are from Fort Frederick ramparts and the Koneswaram Temple cliff walk.

Whale watching season peaks in May and June; book a day ahead through Nilaveli or Trincomalee hotels.

Photography of navy vessels and installations is restricted; ask your boat operator before pointing a camera.
