Sri Lanka Itinerary: 10 Days - Hill Country and East Coast Summer Honeymoon

For weddings between May and September, when the east coast is at its best. Pasikudah offers a bay calm enough to wade a hundred metres out; Arugam Bay adds surf, lagoon boat rides and small beach restaurants. The trip then climbs to Ella for two mountain nights, rides the train through the tea country toward Nuwara Eliya, and ends with an evening at Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth.

Season

May to October

Best May to September, when Pasikudah's sea is calm for swimming and Arugam Bay's surf break is in season; the northeast monsoon from October to January brings rough water to the whole east coast.

The journey, day by day

  1. Sigiriya

The flight lands, and the transfer runs straight to Sigiriya, a 200-metre rock citadel rising sheer out of the jungle and built as a royal palace in the 5th century (about 4 hours via Kurunegala and Dambulla). Check in for the night.

  2. Pasikudah

Climb Sigiriya at sunrise, then drive to Pasikudah via Habarana, a small safari-gateway town, stopping at Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's 12th-century medieval capital, and the Parakrama Samudra, the reservoir King Parakramabahu I constructed to irrigate it (about 3h15 driving, plus time at the ruins). Check in for two nights on the beach.
