About Bogoda Wooden Bridge

The Bogoda Wooden Bridge near Hali-Ela in Badulla District is one of the oldest surviving wooden bridges in Sri Lanka, dating to the 16th century during the Kandyan period. What makes it particularly unusual is its roof structure: the bridge deck is covered with a pitched timber and tile canopy, built to protect the wooden beams from rain and extend the structure's life — a practical solution that resulted in a visually distinctive and historically rare piece of vernacular engineering. The bridge spans the Hali Ela Oya stream and remains in use today, carrying pedestrians across on timbers that have been maintained and partially replaced over four centuries. A small rock temple with faded frescoes stands adjacent to the bridge. The site is rarely visited by tourists, making it one of Badulla District's most authentic and peaceful heritage experiences.

Highlights

  • 16th-Century Wooden Bridge
  • Roofed Bridge Construction (Unique in Sri Lanka)

Practical Tips

Ask for 'Bogoda Purana Pul' (ancient bridge) when giving directions to tuk-tuk drivers

The adjacent temple has interesting Kandyan-era frescoes worth examining before or after the bridge

Combine with a drive through Hali-Ela village for a genuine off-the-beaten-track Badulla outing
