Pasikuda Beach is one of the few beaches in Sri Lanka where the seabed drops so gradually that adults can walk 200 metres from the shore and remain at waist depth, thanks to a reef barrier that absorbs wave energy. The water clarity is high, and the sheltered conditions make it suitable for children and non-swimmers year-round during the eastern dry season. A cluster of mid-range and luxury hotels lines the beach, making it more developed than other eastern beaches. The adjacent Kalkudah bay, two kilometres north, is almost identical in profile and far less crowded. The beach faces northeast, so it receives dramatic sunrises over calm water from May onward.
Visit Kalkudah bay, 2 km north, for the same conditions with far fewer tourists.
The beach is best May to September; northeast monsoon brings rough water from November to February.
Most hotels rent kayaks and snorkel gear at reasonable rates.
No shade on the open beach: bring an umbrella or arrive before 9 AM.
Best time of day: May to September (eastern dry season)
