Couple overlooking dry-season tea country in February

Month guide

Sri Lanka in February

The driest month on every line of our table. If your dates are flexible, this is the one to take.

The verdict

Statistically, Sri Lanka's driest month. Practically, its easiest.

Every region on our table posts its lowest or near-lowest rainfall in February, the Christmas surge has faded to a normal high-season premium, and the marquee experiences (whales off Mirissa, kites at Kalpitiya, Horton Plains under clear sky) are all at full strength. Even the east coast is drying fast, though its real season is still a few months out.

What the month is good for

In season in February

Genuinely in season

  • Whale watching at Mirissa: February-March are the most consistent sighting months
  • Kalpitiya kitesurfing: roughly 25 windy days in the month
  • Horton Plains and World's End at their clearest
  • Sinharaja rainforest in its optimal window
  • Southwest surf season still fully on

Skip or reconsider this month

  • Arugam Bay surf: still out of season (May-October)
  • East-coast beach holidays: close, but March onwards is the honest call

The Kandy-Ella train, this month

As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your February 2027 travel date; check current status before counting on it, especially if the famous ride is a centrepiece of your plans. We arrange the road-to-Nanu-Oya workaround either way.

Dates that shape the month

Festivals and holidays

Independence Day
Thursday 4 February 2027. National ceremonies and parades, biggest in Colombo
Navam Full Moon Poya
Saturday 20 February 2027. Island-wide poya rules apply
Navam Maha Perahera, Gangaramaya
Colombo's grand procession, held annually around the Navam Poya; exact 2027 dates not yet published by the temple at our last check

The Navam Perahera is worth planning around if you are in Colombo; ask us and we confirm the dates as the temple announces them.

Crowds and money

High season at cruising altitude

February carries a moderate seasonal premium, roughly 30-40% above off-peak, but none of the Christmas chaos. Sights are busy at the famous hours, hotels want booking a few weeks ahead rather than months, and the whale boats run daily. It is high season working as intended.

Quick answers

February questions

Is February the best month to visit Sri Lanka?

By the numbers, yes: it is the driest month across every region of the island, from Colombo (roughly 45-70mm) to the hill country to the Cultural Triangle. Whale watching is at its most consistent, Kalpitiya's kite winds are at their best, and the Christmas-price surge has faded to a moderate seasonal premium.

How expensive is Sri Lanka in February?

High season but not surge season. Rates run roughly 30-40% above off-peak from late December through February, which is real money but far from the doubled prices of the Christmas-New Year weeks. Book popular south-coast spots a few weeks ahead and you will be fine.

What festivals happen in February?

Independence Day on Thursday 4 February 2027 brings parades and ceremonies, especially in Colombo. Navam Full Moon Poya falls on Saturday 20 February 2027 with the usual island-wide poya rules, and Colombo's Gangaramaya temple holds its grand Navam Perahera procession around that Poya; the temple had not published exact 2027 dates at our last check.

Is February good for the hill country?

It is arguably the hill country's best month: Nuwara Eliya's driest weather (around 75mm) with cool 10-21°C days, Horton Plains at its clearest for the World's End view, and the tea country photogenic under blue sky. Pack layers; nights at 1,900m are genuinely cold.

Weather figures are typical ranges; festival dates are confirmed for 2026-27 where listed. Updated September 2026.
