Prime season, everywhere west of the mountains and on top of them. The whales, the kites and the surf all agree; only the first week and the east coast disagree.
Is January a good time to visit?
Yes, one of the best months on the classic route. The west coast, south coast, hill country and Cultural Triangle are all firmly in their dry season, whale watching and kitesurfing are both at their peak, and south-west surf is in its most consistent window. Only the east coast is still questionable: Batticaloa gets roughly 269mm for the month, and even there the rain is easing month on month. The first week still carries the Christmas-New Year crush; book ahead for that stretch or arrive from the second week for calmer, cheaper high season.
The verdict
The safest all-round month for the classic route.
January delivers dry, warm coasts in the west and south (Colombo 80mm, Galle 87mm for the month), cool mornings in the tea country, and the Cultural Triangle at comfortable temperatures. The New Year crowds thin out after the first week, leaving high season at its most pleasant. Whale watching off Mirissa and kitesurfing at Kalpitiya are both at full strength, and the south-west surf season is at its most consistent. Only the east coast disagrees: Batticaloa still gets 269mm for the month, so that side of the island stays out of the plan until March.

The weather in January, honestly
January sits inside the northeast monsoon's window on the east coast and the dry season everywhere else, so Colombo, Galle, the Cultural Triangle and the hills all get low rainfall while Trincomalee and especially Batticaloa stay wetter. Kandy's rainfall figure (79mm) comes from a secondary source rather than an official climate normal, so treat it as approximate. Hill-country figures above are Nuwara Eliya's; Ella sits lower and tends to run warmer and drier. Figures are 1991 to 2020 climate averages.

Route planning
How a trip works in January
The classic circuit works at full strength in January: Sigiriya's rock fortress and Dambulla's painted cave temple in the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and the tea country, then a south-coast finish at Galle or Mirissa timed around a whale-watching trip. The only real planning decision is the calendar, the same as December: the first week still carries the Christmas-New Year crush, so arriving from the second week buys the same weather with noticeably fewer people.
Pack for warm, dry coasts and comfortable Cultural Triangle days, and proper layers for cool Nuwara Eliya nights, where the average low sits around 10°C. The east coast stays out of a January route; Batticaloa's 269mm keeps that side of the island wetter than the west through the month.

The Kandy-Ella train, this month
As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your January travel date; check current status before counting on it. We arrange the road-to-Nanu-Oya workaround either way.

Two Januaries: the first week, and the rest
Through roughly 5 to 10 January the Christmas-New Year surge is still running: Germany's latest-ending Weihnachtsferien state runs to 12 January, France's vacances de Noël end 4 January, and the Netherlands' kerstvakantie ends 3 January. Victoria, Australia's summer break runs all the way to 26 January, so Australian family demand stays elevated through the whole month. From mid-January the month relaxes into standard high season, lively at Sigiriya and on the whale boats, but bookable at normal peak rates with space to breathe on the beaches.

Substantially. Colombo (80mm) and Galle (87mm) both run roughly a third to a half of Trincomalee's (152mm) and well under a third of Batticaloa's (269mm) January rainfall, so if beaches are the point, stay south and west; the east's turn starts around March.
Does the New Year crowd overlap January travel from Europe or Australia?
For Germany, France and the Netherlands, the Christmas break ends by 3 to 12 January depending on the country or state, so most European school-holiday demand clears by mid-January. Victoria, Australia's summer break runs to 26 January, so Australian family demand stays elevated through the whole month.
