March breaks the simple west-is-dry rule: by our own regional numbers the east coast is now drier than the west, so both coasts genuinely work. Crowds thin as the European season winds down, prices ease, and the hills stay glorious. The honest caveat is heat: the Cultural Triangle pushes 35°C, so we schedule the big climbs for dawn and keep middays gentle.

March is where the coast preference flips: by this point the east coast is already drier than the west, even though the December advice keeps getting repeated.

The Kandy-Ella train, this month
As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your March 2027 travel date; by March the odds are better than earlier in the season, but check current status before counting on it. We arrange the road-to-Nanu-Oya workaround either way.

March keeps peak-season weather while the crowds and prices taper: the European winter escape wave heads home, hotels loosen, and the famous sights breathe again. For travellers who want the dry-season experience without the January elbows, this is the value pick of the peak months.

Is March a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, and it is the sleeper pick: still dry on the classic route, noticeably quieter than January-February, and uniquely flexible because the east coast has already dried out. By our own regional numbers, Trincomalee (around 55mm) is drier than Colombo in March, so both coasts are genuinely in play.
How hot is Sri Lanka in March?
Hotter than the earlier peak months, especially inland: Anuradhapura hits 35°C maximums against 30-32°C in December-February. Climb Sigiriya at 7am, plan the Cultural Triangle around midday shade and pool time, and carry more water than feels necessary. The coasts stay a manageable 31-32°C and the hills a pleasant 11-22°C.
Which coast should I pick in March?
Either, honestly, and that is unusual. The west and south still work (65-100mm around Colombo), while the east has crossed into its dry pattern. If you want emptier beaches, the east in March delivers them before its own high season begins; Arugam Bay's own best-time lists include March.
Does the southwest monsoon start in March?
No. March-April is the inter-monsoon: mostly dry days punctuated by short afternoon thunderstorms, not sustained monsoon rain. The southwest monsoon proper arrives around May and peaks June to August. March remains firmly inside the good window for the classic route.
