April rewards a route that closes with the hill country and Adam's Peak while the pilgrimage season is close to its peak. A sensible shape starts in the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya's rock fortress, Dambulla's painted cave temple, the ancient capitals Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa), continues to Kandy, and finishes in the hills with Adam's Peak and Nuwara Eliya. Over 13-14 April specifically, build in slack: shops and restaurants close for about a week, and Nuwara Eliya's hotels fill with domestic New Year travellers.
Pack for real heat inland (Anuradhapura 34.7°C, Jaffna 33.8°C), rain gear for the coast, and proper layers for cool hill-country nights. Nuwara Eliya's average low sits around 12°C.

Year-round with no west or south coast beach leg. That makes it a safer April pick than the similarly named Ramayana Trail package, whose Unawatuna finish runs into the April-to-June monsoon.

The Kandy-Ella train, this month
As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your April travel date; check current status before counting on it. Poya-day rules apply island-wide on Bak Poya, as on every other month. The New Year runs deeper: most shops and businesses close for about a week around 13-14 April, and some restaurants reduce hours, so build slack into a trip that lands on those dates.

The pilgrimage crowd, not the beach crowd
The first half of April still sits inside the pricier window the international December-to-March season leaves behind, ahead of the meaningfully cheaper stretch that runs from late April to early December. A second, separate crowd effect follows around 13-14 April: domestic travel spikes for the New Year holiday, concentrated specifically in Nuwara Eliya, where the town's own April motor racing, golf tournaments and flower show pull in Sri Lankan visitors independent of the international season.
