May is when the southwest monsoon typically sets in over the west and south, so rainfall there climbs sharply just as the east coast's dry season opens. The exact onset date shifts year to year. Temperatures barely move across the island in May; it is rain, not heat, that decides where to go. Hill-country figures above are Nuwara Eliya's; Ella sits lower and tends to run warmer and drier. Route planning
How a trip works in May
May rewards a route that leans east and inland rather than one built around west or south coast beach time. A sensible shape starts in the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya's rock fortress, Dambulla's painted cave temple, and the ancient capitals Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa), continues to Kandy and the hill country, then finishes on the east coast at Trincomalee, Pasikudah or Arugam Bay, without doubling back on the same road. If your flight lands or leaves via the west coast, keep that leg short, a single overnight rather than several beach days, since the southwest monsoon is arriving there through the month.
Pack rain gear for any west or south coast time at the start or end of the trip, and light layers for cool nights in Nuwara Eliya, where the mean low sits around 13°C. Elsewhere, standard tropical kit covers it.

The Kandy-Ella train, this month
As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your May travel date; check current status before counting on it. We arrange the road-to-Nanu-Oya workaround either way.

- Thursday 20 May 2027, with 21 May also expected to be a public holiday (pending official confirmation). Nationwide: alcohol sales pause, temples are busiest, and Colombo and Kandy fill with lanterns and illuminated pandals.
Poya-day rules apply island-wide: no alcohol sales, many shops close, temples fill. Vesak itself adds lantern displays and illuminated pandals in Colombo and Kandy specifically, so expect those two cities busier than a normal Poya day.

A quiet month before the summer rush
May sits after the December-to-March peak and before the European summer holidays begin, which is why it is one of the cheaper months to travel on the routes those markets fill later in the year. May is a reasonable month to expect lighter crowds at Sigiriya, Kandy and the east coast beaches than you will find from July.

Vesak (20 May 2027) is a major nationwide Buddhist festival with lanterns and illuminated displays, especially in Colombo and Kandy. Alcohol sales pause and some shops close on the Poya day itself, so plan the itinerary around that day rather than through it.
Is the east coast open in May?
Yes. Trincomalee and Batticaloa, the nearest weather stations to Pasikudah and Arugam Bay, both show low rainfall by May, and Arugam Bay's surf season is already building.
Is May a good month for wildlife?
Good for birds. Kumana's migratory season runs April to July, so May is inside it. Wilpattu is inside its February-to-October visiting window. The Minneriya and Kaudulla elephant gathering itself has not really started yet; that builds later in the year.
