Munneswaram Temple

Munneswaram Temple is a complex of five shrines near Chilaw, one of the five Pancha Ishwarams, ancient Shiva temples spaced around Sri Lanka's coastal perimeter, with a documented history stretching back to at least 1000 CE. Portuguese colonial forces destroyed the temple twice, in 1578 and again in the early 17th century, and both times the local community rebuilt it, a resilience that is part of what draws pilgrims today. The complex is unusual for being visited by both Hindu and Buddhist worshippers, and hosts a four-week annual festival that draws pilgrims from across the island alongside the shorter Navarathri and Sivarathri observances. Opening hours run roughly 5:30am-12:30pm and 4pm-8pm daily, and visitors should cover shoulders and knees and remove footwear before entering any of the five shrines.
