About Kitulgala

Kitulgala is Sri Lanka's adventure sports capital, set in the Kelani River valley where lush rainforest frames Grade 2-4 rapids suitable for first-time rafters and experienced paddlers alike. The main 5km rafting stretch passes cliff-jumping pools, swirling eddies, and sections of calm water ideal for swimming, with the surrounding Kelani Valley forest providing an exceptional backdrop of endemic birdlife. Kitulgala is also historically significant as the location where David Lean filmed 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' in 1957 — the original bridge built for filming has since collapsed, but the river and surrounding landscape are unmistakably the same as in the Academy Award-winning film. Rafting operators provide full safety equipment and guides; sessions typically run four to five hours including a riverside barbecue. The Kelani River runs year-round but is most powerful from May to September after the south-west monsoon.
