About Tangalle Beach

Tangalle is one of the least commercialised beach areas on the southern coast, covering several distinct bays separated by rocky headlands over a 5km stretch east of Tangalle town. The beaches face south-south-east, giving calm, clean swimming from November to April. Medaketiya Beach is a long, almost completely undeveloped stretch ideal for quiet walks. Rekawa Beach, 10km further east, is one of the most important leatherback turtle nesting sites in Asia, with nesting monitored from April to September by a local conservation project that allows accompanied night-time viewing. Tangalle has genuine small-town character and a slower pace than Hikkaduwa or Mirissa — it rewards at least one overnight stay.

Highlights

  • Multiple distinct bays across a 5km coast
  • Rekawa Beach — major leatherback turtle nesting site monitored by conservation project
  • Medaketiya Beach — long, undeveloped stretch for quiet walking
  • 190km from Colombo — genuinely less crowded than the Galle coast
  • Tangalle Lagoon with birdlife and calm water

Practical Tips

Stay at least one night — Tangalle's appeal is its slow pace, not a day-trip attraction.

Visit Rekawa Lagoon at night from April to September to see leatherback turtles nesting under conservation supervision.

November to April is the best swimming season; May to October brings strong surf unsuitable for casual swimming.
