Yala National Park covers 979 sq km of dry zone scrub, grassland, and lagoons in south-eastern Sri Lanka. Block 1, the section open to visitors, holds the highest recorded density of the Sri Lanka leopard of any protected area in the world, making leopard sightings reliable on a morning safari. The park also holds large elephant herds, sloth bears, water buffalo, spotted deer, jackals, estuarine crocodiles, and over 215 bird species. Waterholes and lagoons at Palatupana, Nelum Wewa, and Maha Senanayake Wewa are the most reliable wildlife concentration points. Yala can be congested with jeeps around known leopard territories; for a quieter alternative, Bundala National Park nearby is worth considering. The best sightings are in the early morning (6-10am) and late afternoon (3-6pm).
Book a registered jeep safari through your accommodation or a licensed operator in Tissamaharama.
The 6am morning game drive consistently produces the most wildlife activity.
Yala Block 1 closes from September 1 to October 15 for ecological recovery — check dates before booking.
