Your driver-guide meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport for the transfer into the city, roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Settle into your hotel; if you land with daylight left, a walk along Galle Face Green for sunset is an easy first look at the city. Day 2
Colombo to Hikkaduwa
Colombo to Hikkaduwa
Drive south along the Southern Expressway, roughly 2-2.5 hours, to Hikkaduwa's beach strip. In the afternoon, snorkel the coral inside the Hikkaduwa marine sanctuary or take a first surf lesson at one of the reef breaks. The rest of the day is free on the beach.

Mirissa whale watching, transfer to Yala
Mirissa to Tissamaharama (Yala)
An early-morning boat trip off Mirissa's coast for blue and sperm whales, in season (roughly November-April); this is weather-dependent and not guaranteed every departure. In the afternoon, transfer to Tissamaharama, roughly 2.5-3 hours, your base for the Yala safari.

Yala National Park
A dawn jeep safari, departing around 6am, into Yala's Block I, the most-visited section of the park and reputed for one of the highest wild leopard densities anywhere. Return for a late breakfast, with an optional second, afternoon game drive for those who want another pass at elephants, sloth bears and birdlife.

Yala to Ella
Tissamaharama to Ella, via Wellawaya
Drive north into the hills, roughly 3 hours via Wellawaya and Buttala, climbing steadily out of the dry lowlands. In the afternoon, walk up Little Adam's Peak for panoramic views over Ella's tea-covered valley. Spend the evening at leisure in Ella town.

Climb Sigiriya early, before the heat and the day's crowds build, past the Lion's Paw entrance and the mirror wall to the ruins of King Kashyapa's 5th-century palace at the summit. The afternoon is free, or take the optional village tour by bullock cart with a canoe ride across a nearby lake.

Is 15 days too long to move around this much?
It's paced at one to two nights per stop with a private vehicle covering the road time, so you aren't managing logistics yourself, but it is still a lot of driving. If you'd rather go deeper into fewer regions, ask about splitting this into two shorter loops.
What's the best time of year for the full circuit?
December to March covers both the whale-watching season at Mirissa and the driest weather in the hill country and Cultural Triangle. The east-coast leg (Pasikuda, Trincomalee) is drier May-September, so exact timing is a trade-off across the full loop.
Can we skip the east coast and shorten the trip?
Yes. The route can end after Polonnaruwa and return direct to the airport, cutting the trip to around 12 days. Ask about adding those nights to Ella or Kandy instead if you'd rather stay inland.
Do we need a 4x4 for the whole trip?
No, a standard air-conditioned vehicle covers the whole route including the Yala access roads; only the game drives inside the park itself use dedicated safari jeeps, arranged locally.
Can we extend the trip or slow it down?
